   Thank you Brett for your question. Firstly, the implementation of lesson learned from previous project should be recommended by internal project management methodology. This is usually one of the mandatory project manager´s activities within the initiation and planning process groups. Secondary, the experienced PM understands how important is to identify the potential project threats and opportunities based on all supportive sources e.g. lessons learned databases, assumptions log, and technical documentation. There is no doubt that knowledge and experience from similar projects (usually grouped into the same project portfolio) are very important for a successful project execution. Finally, the project team members or work package leaders should use the related parts of lessons learned database to prevent an issue in their planned activities or work packages and persuade PM about the lessons learned database value.

   Hi Brett, I am in agreement with Mr. Takac but will add further information to help answer your question. Capturing of lessons learned, to sum it up briefly, is pointless and adds little value to the organization if the organization does not collect the data, analyze it, categorize it, publicize it or utilize that information for continuous process improvement initiatives to help improve the organization. In fact, over time, resources engaged in fruitless activities such as this will become uninterested and just go through the motions. So why do it? As a project manager the capturing of the lessons learned are essential for his own success. A god PM will perform the activities defined above an implement those within his or her own projects. His involvement in a PM community will also help promote lesson learned success stories which in fact will or can have a positive impact on a companies culture. Keep taking your lessons learned and find the opportunities within your own reach of influence to make a difference. Good luck.

   ...in addition to all written already, the PM should transform the previous lessons into specific and clear measures, applicable to current project. It makes much easier for the team to apply the lessons. Other good option (if it is in line with company's culture) is the coaching approach - PM stimulates the team members to identify the relevant measures by themselves (which also makes the team members more likely to follow the measures in their work).
