How to assess and remunerate project managers?

   The assessment of project managers is a very interesting topic. I was working as a director of organization units and I had to manage this issue. 1) I think that we have to start the assessment of a project manager by the project team performance measurement. This means that you compare, time, the number of team members, cost, changes/uncertainty against achieved outputs and its quality. 2) The second attribute is to assess the project manager’s proactive activities during a project (risk management and issue avoidance). In other words – what was the benefit of the project manager’s daily activities for the project and team. Does he/she fulfil the project manager role or do they just report and simply pass information to the project board. 3) The third item as you are writing in your question is the social competencies assessment. How does he/she set up and maintain a good project, how does one manage a project team to be result oriented, how to be agile and how do you encourage and motivate the team. An anonymous questionnaire filled out by each team member should be helpful. 4) It is important to look when the project was aligned with an internal project management methodology (project progress measurement, communication plan, Project Manager and Sponsor roles description, change procedure, lessons learned capturing...). Was the internal project management methodology supportive for the project manager? 5) The last step I see is the form and frequency of the project manager’s communication with project stakeholders (project board, subcontractors and other organization units influenced by project work or project outcomes (stakeholder management)). I conclude and agree that a project manager assessment consists not only of project results but also of a project manager’s soft skills which are applied throughout the project. I prefer an interview with the project manager during project and when project is closed. The interview should focus on the difficult situations that arise in a project, issues and a project manager’s problem solving activities and approach.
