What is first common mistake what will Scrum Master do ?

I am curious, what will be first mistake (really common mistake) what will scrum master do on his first project or on beginning of every project. And is on team to warn him that he is doing it again or do it wrong or something? thank you

  1. I think that there are several issues to be taken into consideration when you are going to manage your agile project. As you know, a project is for people, with people and about people. Therefore, my recommendation is to make sure at the beginning of the project that the SCRUM team members: Product Owner and Development team really understand agile environment ( as friendly, innovative, proactive), to deliver project outputs based on the customer demands. It is important TO BE AGILE not only TO DO AGILE. Based on my experience the key project success factors are “agile” contract, project stakeholder engagement, true agile mindset, and closed cooperation with a customer driven by the expected value. Make sure these factors are taken care of. Regarding your second question, the scrum master should be the one, who knows SCRUM in depth and is able to couch others. In a specific case, that the scrum master is managing a first project, the more experience team members should definitely help out when needed.

  2. Hi Ivan, I can tell you also from my own mistakes. Scrum Masters tend to act as project managers and choose a style that is more directive than needed. This makes the team relly on you as a “leader” but it kills their own engagement, feeling of the ownership and responsibility. When leading a Scrum team I’m now trying to switch into more “coaching” than leading mode, being more in the background and stepping in only when necessary. Well... I’m still kind of struggling as I’m very active by nature but this is definitelly the lesson to be learnt...

  3. One of the things SM can neglect is to know scrum team well otherwise team will be as a broken chain without much value. Attitude and AGILE behaviour is inevitable.
