How long should the project planning phase last?

I would like to avoid too much planning but at the same time, I want to be sure I have all I need to execute the project. How long should the planning phase of the project last? How do I know I have gathered enough information to be able to proceed to execution phase?

  1. There is no such thing as too much planning in projects management. You need to create regular plan – list of activities which in sequence, defining date and person responsible for execution. But it is very good to have also backup plans for eventualities which may occur during project. Planning phase must be longest and thoroughly prepared. Trick is to think of all events which may happen during the project and prepare solid response.
