Who should substitute for the PM if neccessary?

We are in the middle of the project, in the execution phase and me as a project manager must unexpectedly leave for couple of weeks because of another project we are running abroad. Who from the current project team should overtake my responsibilities while I am away? Or should I keep leading the project from distance?

  1. Answer to your question is “it depends”. It all depends on what kind of project it is. It is not good idea to lead project from distance. If that could be possible, there is no need to run project. It would be only list of activities which needs to be performed in certain sequence. Duties of project manager can be passed to 2 people. First one would be most technical senior person in project team. This would apply in case when project contains complex technical tasks and low or normal level complexity of tasks from project management perspective. Second person, who can replace you, would be some other project manager. This would apply in case when project contains not complex technical tasks but high level complexity of tasks from project management perspective.
