How to manage good team members quit?

One of my team members wants to leave the team due to various reasons (problems with other team members, project itself not interesting any more, no learning of new things etc.). Is there any standardized process of team-member leaving? What should I – as a project manager – do when a team member is leaving the project?

  1. It all depends on his position in project team and his importance for project. If he is only regular member of project team with no special duties, tasks and knowledge, he should make handover of status of his tasks, duties to person who is going to replace him. If person, who is leaving is technical leader whose role is important for project, project manager needs to find suitable replacement capable to cover all technical topics occurring in the project. Project manager should insist on proper handover of all information, topics, tasks and duties related to project. If new person is technically strong, he/she may be very beneficial for the project.
