Risky projects - invest or not to invest?

Is there any point in investing resources (human, financial, ..) in risky projects? I.e. innovative projects experimenting with new products, ideas; promising projects with very unclear results. Can you maybe tell the proportion? regular, “safe" projects : risky, uncertain projects

  1. It is very risky to invest into innovative and research projects with unclear results. This is matter of choice made by company. This is being done also for research of development of whole mankind. There are many companies which invested into very risky research and development projects, some projects were total waste of money but some other projects brought enormous benefits which prevailed all monetary loses. As example I would mention NASA. During projects for space exploration they were able to come up with many solutions which significantly affecting also our daily life. It is known that only low percentage of projects running by pharmaceutical companies is successful. They are investing large amounts of money into developments of drugs for treatment of diseases. Profit from developed drugs prevails loss from not successful projects.

    1. Before each project PM has to present feasibility study or logframe to the sponsor and sponsor need to make go/no go decision.
