Commission based salary

   Sales is obviously the primary area where commission based salary makes sense. However in today's world it's a bit more complicated if a commission or salary-based model makes more sense when you factor in the fact workers are more fluid in their job movement (plus market research) and there's increased pressure on employers to offer better perks. My answer, from a sales perspective, is to balance between the two extremes. Maintain a smaller commission-based program to drive incentive to sell but offer a higher base salary as well to give employees a more secure and less all-or-nothing sense of profession. In some industries it may make more sense to just have a smaller salary and large commission program, but there needs to be incentive somewhere outside the possibility of getting into trouble.
