Delegation of assigments

Hello, I would like to know how do you delegate an important assignment to others while ensuring that it will be completed successfully? Thank you in advance.

  1. In order to make sure that it is successful I would recommend to delegate similar task with similar scope and form but not on critical project or customer. Initially it could be done on project of smaller size where you can also check how successful it was and then after evaluation of performance you may decide to delegate more important assignment knowing that the person will handle it without any issues.

  2. There is a saying "Never delegate your reputation". So if you decide to delegate your important assignment or task, you shall have a really good reason for it. To maximize the likelihood of successful completion, you can divide the task into parts with partial outputs and/or schedule status review meetings. Also, don't make the deadline of the delegated task same as the deadline of your original task. The time reserve allows you to correct or "polish" the outputs, if necessary.

  3. For me the key is to find a compatible tracking tool, where one will write down her/his progress. I personally use Google Keep with one-off tasks and for a more complex project with more stakeholders, in my non-profit we use a Google spreadsheet document with the timeline of the project and columns: who is responsible, what is the task, what is the deadline, what is the importance, what is the status, and any comments. A weekly sync is the best time to align on what has been done and what needs to be done either as 1-1 or as a whole team.
