The role of the project management office.

Impact

Project management office is an organizational unit of a project oriented permanent organization with adequate equipment and personnel, responsible for integrated methodical and informational support for project proposer, project owner and project manager.

Recommendation

Project management office: • provides the methodics for project and program management and requires its correct and consistent usage, • builds up and maintains an integrated system of instruments for project management and programe management, • supports the portfolio manager or immediately manages the project and programe portfolio starting with project origination, however does not manage the projects, because this is the responibility of project managers, • evaluates individual projects, but the approval of projects is the responibility of organization’s top management, • after project approval allocates the resources to individual projects, • maintains the project and programe register, • maintains the database of ressources and their sources inclusive project management proffesionals, • methodically supports the project proposers, owners and managers with elaborating corresponding project documents, • approves all documents of given project according to responsibility matrix of the permanent organization, • monitores, controls and reports about individual projects, • supports solving interproject problems (programe and project portfolio management), • provides proffessional consultations and education for project management. Particular permanent organization usually uses only particular combination of the project management office tasks depending on the project maturity of the organization.
