Project initiation is the first process group from the project management cycle. It follows the project proposal acceptance at the end of the introducing the internal project into portfolio or after the decision to acquire the contract at the end of the introducing the external project into portfolio.

The project initiation includes following nine processes: 1.1 Integrated project initiation (the part of the project integration) 1.2 Project scope definition 1.3 Project quality management definition 1.4 Human resources management definition 1.5 Project procurement management definition 1.6 Project time management definition 1.7 Cost and finance management definition 1.8 Risk and opportunities management definition 1.9 Communication management definition. The project initiation begins with the start-up workshop and ends with the kick-off meating. The project initiation is typical through indefinite expectations, great uncertainty and time stress. The project initiation requires therefore great attention, intensive participation of the interested parties and carefull preparation of the resultant decisions. The outcome of the internal project initiation is the project definition report. The outcome of the external project initiation is the decision about the offer.
